Dense pin fin heat sinks generate substantial cooling power in high airspeed environments
Dense pin fins are highly-suitable for the impingement cooling mode, in which a fan is placed on top of the pins, blowing air directly into the pin array
In the impingement cooling mode additional cooling power is generated due to additional turbulence created inside the pin array
For the purpose of mounting fans in the impingement cooling mode, heat sinks are available with threaded stand offs inserted on top of the pin array(optional)
Cool Innovations is committed to the provision of custom parts in a cost effective fashion, generally without any tooling or setup charges. Customizable parameters include length, width and height
Cool innovations' heat sinks are lapped in order to reduce the contact resistance between the heat sink and the device
Dense pin fin heat sinks range from a footprint of 2.50" x 2.50" to a footprint of 9.80" x 9.80" and from an height of 1.0" to a height of 1.7"
Manufacturing Technology
Dense pin fin heat sinks for Power devices are manufactured via the Cold Forging process
The cold forging process allows for the use of highly conductive aluminum alloys
The process ensures that no air bubbles, cavities or any other impurities are trapped within the material
Materials
Aluminum pin fin heat sinks are forged from pure aluminum (AL1100)
The thermal conductivity of AL 1100 is 1510 btu/in ft2 hr of. (~50% higher than AL 380, a common cast alloy)
Base Finish
Pin fin heat sinks for SM devices are lapped
The lapping process significantly improves the flatness and the surface finish of the base of the heat sink, when compared to conventional base finishing processes
The contact resistance between the heat sink and the device is reduced significantly following the completion of the lapping process
Flatness: Better than 0.001 inch/inch
Surface Finish: 16 RMS or better
Plating (optional)
Anodize - black, hard black, clear, red
Nickel (electroless or electrolytic)
All heat sinks are 6/6 RoHS compliant
Densely configured pin fins provide additional cooling power when placed in the impingement cooling mode
Impingement cooling consists of a fan being placed directly on top of the heat sink, in a perpendicular fashion
Impingement cooling provides up to a 20 per cent performance premium when compared to traditional cooling from the side
In the impingement cooling mode, the air is distributed evenly along the surface of the heat sink, thus eliminating the temperature gradient that is typical to horizontal cooling. The larger the heat sink, the more significant this effect is
The additional cooling power stems from the increased air turbulence between the pins in the impingement cooling mode
